A memorial donated and erected on 25th Sept. 1988 by R. G. Thompson Limited & Trethewey Stone Industries, stands in Anglican Division E of Waikumete Cemetery in memory of more than 1000 Auckland citizens who succumbed to the influenza pandemic during late 1918 and early 1919.  465 of whom we have confirmed are interred in various areas of the cemetery. We suspect that there are further influenza victims interred here at Waikumete and therefore regard this research to be a continual work in progress and would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to share information about those interred or memorialised in Waikumete  Cemetery whose deaths were influenza pandemic related.

Lest we forget.

Our list of Waikumete Cemetery interments for influenza pandemic related deaths comes in two parts:
The first is a list of individuals confirmed to have died of influenza related causes and the second part is of individuals whose cause of death we are unsure about due to inconsistent information on records. These interments range from highly likely yet unproven to be influenza pandemic related, to possibly pandemic related simply due to death occurring during the main time frame of the pandemic.
Burial plots of influenza victims are being progressively photographed where possible, and names on this list highlighted in green are linked to images of individual graves. There may also be further information included with an image such as death notices and obituaries and others who are recorded as being interred with the individual.

Auckland Health Board records, Burial records, Auckland Hospital death registers, newspapers, and military personnel files have been used as sources to identify the influenza pandemic victims and possible victims recorded below. Click this link to see a more detailed list which includes related sources for each individual.  Influenza Pandemic Death Sources
