Words hold great power. They can bring forth emotion, stir the soul and inspire us as well as comfort us in times of need. The written word at a time of grief is a meaningful and healing acknowledgment of loss.

Waikumete cemetery is a place of words – conversations, prayers, thoughts, memories and epitaphs. An epitaph in honour of the deceased can reveal much about them and those close to them, as inscriptions were usually thoughtfully considered and paid for by each letter, and therefore tell us something about love, respect and the wealth or budget of those erecting the grave marker. These words inscribed in stone are a window into the past that deteriorate over time and are eventually lost if not preserved.
