Locating
a burial plot in this large, complex cemetery can be quite a challenge. Over
the last 6 years Kath Kingswood has been working on recording those residing in
the cemetery as accurately as practicable using available cemetery records,
newspapers and the physical cemetery site itself. This is a huge undertaking as
there are over 90,000 residents, and new interments are regularly taking place.
This project will continue to be an ongoing work in progress. Please check back for more information on residents as this resource grows.
Kath’s
charts, division records and alphabetical lists of residents have proved to be
a valuable resource for those looking for a loved one and are as easy to use as 1, 2, 3.
1. Search for your loved one in the alphabetical listings of residents and memorials. You may be lucky enough to find a photo of their grave linked in green to their name with the possibility of additional details.
2. Look through available Burial and Ashes Areas documents for further information about the site your loved one resides in.
3. Check to see if a chart is available of the burial area to get an idea of the physical location and to assist in locating the grave site.

Residents and Memorials:
This
is the alphabetical listing of cemetery residents that you will find in the
drop down menu bar. Known burials, ashes and those memorialised within the
cemetery are included.
If the
online cemetery records indicate that the whereabouts of a resident is
confidential, this is respected and details are not included in our alphabetical
listing of residents and memorials.
However
if a grave marker is found for a confidential resident on the cemetery site
this will be shown in the charts and burial and ashes areas documents and in
our photo albums.
Memorials
have recently started to be added to this list as they are discovered, and will
continued to be recorded.
If
you are able to help us to ascertain the names and details of any residents we
would appreciate hearing from you.
Burial and Ashes Areas:
These
records are helpful for locating others believed to be in the same plot and the
residents in surrounding plots, who can often be relations or close friends.
Residents
names, ages, and year of death are shown and graves are identified (where
known) as marked or unmarked. Grave inscriptions may be recorded, details in
italics are transcribed as on the grave marker.
Inscriptions
highlighted in bold blue indicate that the plot does not have the details that
are showing in the New Zealand Cemetery Records, they have either disappeared
or been replaced. The intention is to document the words that had once been
there.
Details
highlighted in red or yellow alert us that a discrepancy has been noted.
It
will be noticed that plots are not always shown in numerical order, this is
because we have documented them the way they are located in the cemetery, and
plots can be laid out differently particularly in the historic areas of the
cemetery. Many will start with numbers such as 0c, 0a, 1, 3, 5, 7, 7a, 7b, 9.
Charts:
The
charts are a valuable tool for finding a plot.
We anticipate having charts available for most burial and ashes areas with the exception of gardens and octagons.
Plots
highlighted with bold indicate a grave believed to be marked, it is
suggested to use these plots to help find your way.
A recent addition to the
charts is the use of italics to indicate graves found to be damaged or
difficult to read. This is a new feature that not all charted burial areas yet have
the benefit of.
Handy Tip:
It is
helpful to realise that the cemetery opened in Glen Eden, therefore Row 1, Plot
1 in a burial or ashes area usually begins from that corner.
Discrepancies:
Variances do occur between
sources, where possible these are thoroughly checked prior to documentation and
if uncertain we indicate this in our records.
how do I upload memorial photos
ReplyDeleteThank you for you enquiry, unfortunately only admin. can upload images, however if you have an image that you would us to share please contact us via e-mail discoverwaikumete@gmail.com. If however you wish to download for your own collection click on the arrow down icon.
ReplyDeleteIs there a reverse search function based on entering the plot number? I understand that there are 6 people buried in my great-grandparents plot and I only know the identity of 5.
ReplyDeleteHi Peter, The short answer is no. However, unfortunately, much of our work is waiting for us to check etc. before we make it public. If you care to send me the plot details I would be happy to see what I can do for you. You are welcome if you prefer to contact us via email, discoverwaikumete@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteHi ...Can you tell me the date of my grandfather's death and the age he was. He would have died around 1947. Name Joseph Chapman. He is buried in the same plot as my grandmother, Annie Elizabeth Chapman. Presbyterian, Division F row 10 plot 15. died 16 October 1959. thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hi Corinne, I am afraid that I have some conflicting info. for you. Cemetery and Billion Graves indicate that JOE Chapman, buried in this grave died 6/1/1949 aged 78. Headstone seem to suggest (no day) Dec. 1949. Also, according to Cemetery records & headstone Annie died 8/5/1955. Hoping this is of use to you. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteHi all, I am contacting you from Ireland and I am wondering whether there would be any way in which to see the gravestone of my grandfather. We have never been able to visit New Zealand and my mother has never seen her father's grave before. The details are as follows: McGill: Frederick: Service Persons Area M, Row 12, Plot 73. Any help with this query would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Catherin
ReplyDeleteHi Catherin, I am afraid that due to COVID we are unable to help you at the moment. Have checked Find-a-grave & Billion Grave with no results there either. We are prepared to take an image for your mother but may not be able to do so until after the new year.
DeleteMy ancestors ashes are listed on records as being at Eucalyptus Glade, Row Sc - Ash. Would there be a memorial plaque for them.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that I have taken so long to reply, I needed time to work out how best to respond to your enquiry. Firstly, no scattered ashes areas have a memorial plaque, however a number of people have put memorial plaques on the memorial walls. Secondly, I very much doubt that your ancestors ashes are in fact in Eucalyptus Glade. Sadly, when the cemetery database system was changed in 2017 all the “scattered ashes” records were migrated to show the place of scattering to be in “Eucalyptus Glade, Row SC”, which was opened around 2014. There have been many scattered ashes areas over the last near 100 years and the cemetery office does not have the records which would help them to advise you. No doubt you will wish to clarify this with the office, the contact details are: Ph 0800 4 CEMETERY (0800 423638) | Mobile 021 527 933| Fax 09 818 8656.

ReplyDeleteHello I tried to locate a burial site on Protestant Lawn D, Row 4, Plot 74 as need to locate this site for a very elderly woman who wants to visit while in Auckland. I spent two hours in the area as located on the map by the office with no luck. I couldn’t find any signage as to the Protestant lawn or any numbering. Can you help with a photo, directions or is there someone that can show me where it is so I can take her there? I need to locate this before March 26. Thank you Alison
Is this the plot for Grant & Eric Howard? If so this link will take to an image, that we intend to replace in autumn https://www.flickr.com/photos/discoverwaikumetecemetery/51139165376/in/photostream/
ReplyDeleteThanks to your enquiry I have added our chart for this area to our blog site, link below. Feel that using with this you will find her marker easily by using the bush, marked in green, in row 5 as your guide.

Looking for record of burial for George Robertson who died at "kilbryde" Parnell November 10th 1918
ReplyDeleteI am afraid that we cannot help you there, we are aware that not all the names of influenza victims had been recorded during this terribly busy period, i.e. Geoffrey Rice has noticed I think it was what he called the "10 lost boys from Mt Eden", who passed away during the time that all victims who died there during this period had to be taken to the Mt Eden Railway Station and to be taken from there to Waikumete Cemetery whose names have not been recorded.
ReplyDeleteIf you have any luck with finding him & find that he was buried at Waikumete Cemetery we would be interested in sharing that information in order to make it easier for anybody else searching for him.
Thankyou for your response. I had a feeling that this might have been the case.
ReplyDeleteHi I would like to try and locate the Grave of Percy Adamson Cook a 1 year old who died in 1902. I had a look today but It was very wet and I was short of time. The council records show he is Noncomformist Division C, Row 10 Plot 50. I don't know if I was in the correct place. You cemetery chart does not have Division C listed. Cheers Russell
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately we are not ready to make this chart public at this time, however we are happy to send you details on how to find this unmarked grave.
DeletePercy's grave is 2 rows in on the left and facing Kowhai Road, with plot 54, the marked Wallace plot being 2 plots to the left & the marked double Wrigley plot (49 & 51) behind.
Suggest that as you go down Kowhai Road, that as you pass the Simon grave on the right hand side that you slow down and park close to the Hemingway grave that you stop. On the opposite side of the row you will find the Doran headstone, there is an unmarked grave to the right of this & Percy's plot is in the next row.
If you have any further issues please don’t hesitate to ring Kath on 09 625-1750

Thankyou for getting back to me. Unfortunate that the poor baby does not have a headstone. His father Isaac Cook is shown as being in the Eucalyptus Glade, but I note from an earlier message that is probably not the case, and could have been scattered anywhere? Percys mother - Maria Cook who died in 1930 (my Great Grandmother - Paternal) is at Hillsbourgh. I have tried once to find the grave and was unsuccessful. Is there a Hillsbourgh expert out there?
ReplyDeleteHi Russell, about Isaac, when the records were migrated to this current form all records claiming to be scattered ashes where migrated to Eucalyptus Glade, however I believe that there had been holes
ReplyDeletebehind the old crematorium, situated on Freesia Road East & shown on the cemetery map. Behind the area there are a number of trees & I have noted that looking at them from certain angles that they can be considered to be in groups of circles. I have recently had an area called "Circle of Memories" had ashes scattered in a similar manner. I suspect that this was used during about the time when the old chapel was due to be demolished & the building of the new crematorium.
As for Hillsbourgh Cemetery I am afraid that I am concentrating on Waikumete Cemetery with the knowledge that I will not be able to complete the work in my lifetime. However, I have been told by staff that have been there that graves are hard to find there due to the close proximity of the graves.
As Waikumete Cemetery is responsible for this area & hold the records I would suggest that you approach the friendly office staff there.
Hi, I would like to be locate and visit the grave for my great uncle Edward Rice please id 235383182. He is buried in the Roman Catholic Division C Row23 Plot 84. I went and tried to find it without success, as there are so many unmarked plots. Can you help thanks. Quentin
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteHi Quentin, apologise for not responding earlier, hadn't checked the comments area for some time. Your Great Uncle's grave is unmarked, however we have an image of the grave made public, it shows that the plot has marked graves each side of it & a view of the area behind so that he should be easy to locate as you go back to find him. The image is taken as you walk down the row so if you click on images each side to will be able to see what his neighbouring graves look like. Cheers.

Hi there. I visited Waikumete Cemetery today to try and find graves of three relatives: James Houston, and Albert Simpkin Hutchinson and Charlotte Augusta Hutchinson. I could not find marked graves for any of them. I have just found out through your site that James’ was unmarked. Is there any chance you’d be able to see whether Albert and Charlotte’s grave is marked or not?
ReplyDeleteApologise for not checking our comments earlier, however I have somewhat good news. It appears that Albert marked Charlotte's demise, I have not checked this grave so don’t know whether his name has been added since the records I used that we done in the 1990's. Am sending links to chart for this area, you will notice that Row 2 is near the bush, and for the area which shows the wording that was on the marker at that time.

ReplyDeleteWe have no details for this man & would need more info. i.e. date of death in order to be able to search further.
ReplyDeleteHi there I’m trying to locate the grave of my great grandmother. It’s Protestant Lawn A, Row 15, Plot 15. Are there any markers or way for me to tell which is row 15? Thank you
ReplyDeleteI understand why you are having difficulty finding this plot A This area has a barely visible dividing line separating the rows. The first side has rows 1-7 and the other rows 8-16 with 16 starting with William Shirley's grave. The second row in (Row 15, Plot 1) starts with Charles Deadman.
DeleteOld records (late 1990's) indicate that this plot is unmarked, however it is behind a marked grave for Peter Penny & between two marked plots for Cater & Brown.
Should you still have difficulties please feel free to contact us again.
